Salaries for employees in the trade sector (wholesale and retail) are considerably imbalanced in the Czech Republic - significant differences are primarily between the capital and the rest of the country. An examination of statistical salary differences by regions reveals that total salaries for trade employees in Prague are up to 43% higher than in other regions, which equates to around CZK 9,833 more for employees in Prague.

This is based on the sector-specific SALARY REPORT IN TRADE (Wholesale and Retail) analysis completed by the Platy.cz portal (the report comprehensively analyses the remuneration system for Czech employees in trade and is available to download here).

Total salaries are up to 30% higher in Prague when compared to areas outside the capital but these differences are much more significant, up to 43% for the salaries of employees in trade. Prague-based employees also have more non-financial benefits. While the median value of gross salary in trade is CZK € 1,283 in Prague, a total gross salary fluctuating around € 898 is standard outside the capital. Total salary includes financial premiums and bonuses that employees receive in addition to their basic salary.

In terms of financial benefits (variable salary component, 13th salary and bonuses), the situation is as follows: employees outside Prague receive financial benefits much more frequently but the average value of these financial benefits is lower. This is directly related to the significant differences in basic salary, which is used to determine the amounts of these individual financial benefits.

Focusing in on the lowest income group, the decile of the lowest paid employees in trade (1st decile) receives € 781 in Prague, while the same decile in other regions receives € 555, which approaches the minimum wage. Shop assistants are the most frequently represented in this salary group.

Looking at the highest earning decile of employees (9th decile), the standard in Prague is € 2,357 while € 1,673 is the average salary for the highest earning decile outside the capital.

Trade salaries in Prague are much more competitive compared to salaries in the regions.

Miroslav Dravecký, an analyst for the Paylab.com portal that encompasses a network of local salary portals, including Platy.cz, specifies: "The regions where the price of labour in trade has remained the lowest over the long-term are the Karlovy Vary Region and the Liberec Region. Salary differences are anywhere from € 463 to €488 compared to earnings in Prague."
